...What We're Up To These Days...
...jazz-rock-samba-fusion...Jazz-Rock-Samba-Fusion? It's the best phrase to describe what we do. It's Jazz improvisation meeting Funk and Brazilian rhythms over Rock songs. It's a unique sound that's been forged out of marathon gigs throughout Northern Illinois over the past six years. It's the sound of a rhythm section that has been working together for 10 years, twisting and turning its way through songs like a machine. It's the sound of a guitarist melding Jazz, Rock, Folk, Blues, Afrobeat and Bossa Nova like a mad chemist in the wee hours of the night. It's the sound of a jazz band not content to play by the rules. In short, it's Jazz like you've never heard it before.

...Making Jazz Fun Again Since 2006...This has been the paul abella trio's motto since the day after our first gig. What started out as a band that was assembled to be a back to basics trio that would play tunes from Nat King Cole and some bossa novas, sambas and rumbas here and there quickly turned into something else entirely. Sure, the Latin grooves still bump up next to a distinct Jazz sensibility and Rock energy, but this is not stoic music to be still to in the back of a dimly lit club. Instead, the paul abella trio has learned from Jazz masters like Ramsey Lewis, Les McCann, Eddie Harris, Mongo Santamaria and a slew of others how to make Jazz something that is upbeat, humorous, and above all else, FUN! Fun is why we play tunes that we love from artists that we grew up with - REM, A-Ha, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, The Allman Brothers Band and many others. Interspersed among those jams are original slabs of "acoustic fusion," melding our disparate influences in a grooving good time and plenty of Brazilian classics from Jobim, Luiz Bonfa and others. If you're looking for jazz AND you're looking for a good time, then you are in the right spot!
